Love is all around us right now. It’s in the air, and it’s all some of us can think about. Love isn’t restricted to just your family and friends. When you’re working with professionals and using the service they provide, you should love them, too. Sure, it’s a different kind of love, but it’s equally as important.

When you barely tolerate your real estate agent, the entire deal is more stressful and drawn out. Not necessarily because things are going wrong, but because you’re desperate to be done with the contract and your agent. Instead of picking your Realtor® based on a billboard or who lives in your homeowner’s association, there are other ways to find someone you’ll love working with.

Interview Before You Hire

Put together a short list of possible Realtors® to work with and have a conversation with them. It doesn’t have to be very long or it can as formal as a listing presentation. Either way, the point is to get a feel for them as a professional and a person. By not going with the first name you’re given or find, you have a better chance of finding someone you’ll love working with.

Ask for Referrals from Friends and Family

When you’re asking for suggestions of real estate agents to work with, ask another question. Why do you like them? Maybe they didn’t really but it’s the only name they know. Maybe they loved their Realtor® and can give you multiple reasons why. Listen to those reasons and consider the agent who made their client extremely happy for whatever reason.

Look for Personality and Skill

A Realtor® who behaves professionally, knows how to negotiate, and has the skill to help you as a buyer or seller is an absolute must. But there’s more to it. Your personalities have to fit, too. You’re going to spend a lot of time chatting, emailing, and texting each other. If you don’t communicate in a similar style or you annoy each other, it’s going to be a long, difficult road to the closing table. Yes, your agent should have skills, but you should also genuinely like them.

Pick Someone Who Tells You What You Need to Hear

We all want to hear that we can get a home in that neighborhood for cheap or that our home will sell for an astronomical price. But if it’s not true, you’re only being set up for heartbreak. The Realtor® you work with should listen to what you want and kindly, but seriously, be able to tell you what the reality is for your situation. The agent who won’t disagree with you or help you understand the market isn’t serious about getting you to the closing table.

Sellers, Look for Marketing Skills

As a seller, it’s not enough to put your home on the MLS and hope for the best. You need a Realtor® who uses all the available tools to get your home noticed. From professional photography to social media buzz, the right Realtor® for you doesn’t rely on “how things used to be” to sell your home nor do they rely on a single trick. They use everything available to them to get your home sold: from available technology to the tried and true methods that have worked for years.

Buyers, Look for Someone In Your Corner

Sellers need this, too, but as a buyer, you desperately need someone on your side. The Realtor® you love will negotiate hard for you, give you the straight truth about a property, and want the home you buy to be the very best one for you. Sometimes that means they’ll tell you the home you love is overpriced or in bad condition. And sometimes it means they’ll text you late at night because a new listing just came on the market that they know you’ll want to see.

The best Realtor® for you has your best interests in mind, listens to what you want, and helps you navigate the entire process. By the time you get to the closing table, they should have done such a good job for you that you’re happy to give their name out to family and friends. That’s how you know you’ve found a Realtor® you love.
